And How Does One Abandon Desire?
How do we abandon desire? We give up our desire for samsaric things when we recognize that the nature of samsara is suffering and that everything in samsara impermanent, that everything is changing, nothing stays the same for very long. We replace that desire with the desire to become free from samsara altogether . . .
In samsara, [we experience suffering in relationship to] people we like, those we don't like, and our own bodies.
We have lots of different kinds of suffering in relationship to those we don't like, but we also experience suffering by being attached to those we love. And our bodies create suffering for us by getting sick or being weak.
If we consider things in this way, we will think, "How can I get out of here? How can I get out of samsara altogether?" We won't think, "How can I get more into samsara?" "How can I get more things and more status in samsara?"
